Time, travel and costs: practical questions to ask a study team

Science gets the headlines, but the practical side decides whether taking part is workable. Here are questions people often find useful.

The short version

  1. Costs and reimbursements differ widely between studies.
  2. Ask about travel, parking, meals and time off before agreeing.
  3. The consent form should explain who pays for what; read it with the team.

Time

Ask how long each visit lasts, how often they happen, and whether some can be done at off hours. Ask what happens if a visit has to be rescheduled.

Travel

Some studies reimburse mileage or provide transport, others do not. If you would have to travel far, ask whether a closer location or a remote option exists.

Costs

The consent form should explain which procedures are paid for by the study and whether any costs could fall to you or your insurance. Ask for clarification if the wording is unclear.

Everything else

Ask about childcare, time away from work, and whether a letter for an employer is available. None of this is something we can answer for you; the study team can.
