Remote and home visits: what “decentralized” usually means

Some studies now move part of the schedule out of the clinic, using phone calls, video, apps or visits at home. The word for this is decentralized.

The short version

  1. Decentralized studies move some steps to home or a local provider.
  2. Many are hybrid, mixing in-person and remote visits.
  3. Ask which parts must still happen in person and how your data is handled.

Different shades

A fully remote study is rare. Most are hybrid: some steps by video or an app, others at a clinic or with a visiting nurse. The listing or consent form says which.

What remote steps look like

Examples include questionnaires on a phone, a video check-in, or a kit delivered to your home. How it works varies by study and you would receive instructions from the team.

Things to ask

Ask what equipment is needed, who to contact if it fails, how your information is kept secure, and which visits cannot be done from home.

A note on expectations

Remote does not mean easier or lighter. It changes where the work happens. Only the study team can describe the commitment for their study.
